Richard Kirwan. Illustration: in a book by Henry Fitz-Patrick BerryRichard Kirwan (1733-1812) was an Irish chem­ist and mineralogist, president of the Royal Irish Academy for 23 years, and author of the first systematic treatise on mineralogy, also making many contributions to chemistry. He also advocated flood geology and vigorously opposed the increasingly influential uniformitarian theories of James Hutton, the predecessor of Sir Charles Lyell.
