Athanasius Kircher. Drawing: Cornelius Bloemart.Athanasius Kircher (1601 -1680) was a learned Jesuit who published a treatise on Noah’s Ark and the ef­fect of the flood on the earth’s land surfaces. He made a number of scientific studies which anticipated later breakthroughs, including the partial deciphering of Egyp­tian hieroglyphics and the germ theory of disease. He in­vented a magic lantern, an aeolian harp and other devices.
